My Adventures in Sewing

Archive for the ‘Needle & Thread’ Category

It has been quite a while since I have posted, but life is happening & I’m trying not to miss it.¬† ūüôā¬† Alot¬†going on, however, today I found some time to sew.¬† My cousin is having a new baby any minute now & I wanted to send some cute baby bibs.¬† I did follow a pattern, Simplicity 2468, and selected 2 views: a crab & a turtle.¬† I completed the crab (less the eyes) today & plan on making to turtle tomorrow.¬†

The pattern was relatively¬†easy to follow (being a newbie, I find some of the pattern-speak very confusing).¬† I had a little trouble with one of the neck-ties (as you will see in the photo),¬† It got a little twisted when I tried to make sure it wasn’t in the way of getting sewn over, however, I figure it adds a little character & proves that I made it myself ūüėȬ† —¬† It’s not perfect, but it’s perfectly homemade.¬† That’s a great name for a blog —– maybe I’ll change mine…….

I will be sure to post some pics tomorrow, along with photos of some great giveaway gifts I have received ūüôā

I am one that cooks dinner every night for my family.¬† I love to cook & take pride in putting a great tasting and great¬†looking meal on the table.¬† Eight times out of ten, my placemats¬†are in the wash – thus my quick fix is putting dishtowels¬†under each place setting.¬† While my family doesn’t seem to mind, it does take-away from my overall presentation (in my mind anyways).¬† So why haven’t I whipped together some new placemats, you ask.¬† Well,¬†that¬†is a¬†VERY good question.¬† ūüôā

What could be simpler?¬† Cut a rectangle, sew¬†four straight lines (leave a hole to invert the project) and voila!¬†a placemat!¬† It really doesn’t get much simpler, so I started going through my fabrics.

The majority of my fabrics have been purchased from the remnant bin…after Halloween ūüôā¬† I have several great black patterned pieces (not so obviously Halloween), some obvious Halloween patterns and a great piece of Orange.¬† I knew I wanted to make a double-sided¬†placemat and¬†I could get 4 cut pieces out of a black with white polka-dots and that great piece of Orange ūüôā¬†

To make sure my pieces were cut straight,¬†I pulled out my cutting mat, rotary cutter & ruler.¬† I measured twice (ok, 3 & 4 times) and began my game of Twister.¬† I don’t know what it is, but I cannot use my rotary cutter without getting all tangled¬†up in myself!¬† LOL!¬† All pieces¬†cut, I began pinning & sewing.¬† ¬†¬†¬†

I was so excited to have 1 whole placemat completed by the time it was time to start dinner ūüôā¬† No, I am not the fastest seamstress in the west, but sometimes slow & steady wins the race.¬†

Tomorrow I plan to finish up the other 3 mats & will post pictures of my finished product.
